Essential Qualification (UGC Regulations 2018)
Candidates must satisfy either A or B:
- A. A Master's degree with at least 55% marks (or an equivalent grade on a point scale where a grading system is followed) in the relevant subject from an Indian university or an equivalent degree from an accredited foreign university, and must have cleared the National Eligibility Test (NET) conducted by the UGC or CSIR, or a similar test accredited by the UGC such as SLET/SET, or must hold a Ph.D. awarded in accordance with the UGC (Minimum Standards and Procedure for Award of M.Phil./Ph.D. Degree) Regulations 2009 or 2016 and their amendments. Candidates registered for the Ph.D. programme before 11.07.2009 are governed by the then-existing ordinances and are exempt from NET/SLET/SET subject to the conditions in the advertisement (regular-mode Ph.D., thesis evaluated by at least two external examiners, open viva voce, two research papers from the Ph.D. work with at least one in a refereed journal, and two conference/seminar papers).
- B. A Ph.D. degree obtained from a foreign university or institution ranked among the top 500 in the world by QS, THE or the ARWU of Shanghai Jiao Tong University at any time.
Notes on Eligibility
- A minimum of 55% marks at Master's level is essential; a 5% relaxation is allowed at Bachelor's and Master's level for SC/ST/OBC (non-creamy layer) and differently abled candidates.
- A 5% relaxation (55% to 50%) is allowed to Ph.D. holders who obtained their Master's degree before 19.09.1991.
- Time taken to acquire M.Phil./Ph.D. is not counted as teaching or research experience; active service spent pursuing a research degree simultaneously with a teaching assignment without leave is counted as teaching experience.
- The Academic Score in Appendix II (Table 3A) of the UGC guidelines is used only for shortlisting; selection is based on interview performance.
- Punjabi passed up to Matric standard is essential.
