PhD in Civil Engineering, Water Resources Engineering, Hydrology, Environmental Engineering, Systems and Control, or closely related field (thesis submitted candidates may apply). Minimum 60% from Graduation onward and 55% in Class 10th and 12th.

Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Gandhinagar, Research & Development Office invites online applications for a temporary position of Post-Doctoral Fellow in the Department of Civil Engineering (Post Doctoral Researcher under GAPD Scheme & AICOE). Essential Qualification/Experience (as per Institute norms)

  • PhD in Civil Engineering, Water Resources Engineering, Hydrology, Environmental Engineering, Systems and Control, or a closely related field. Candidates who have submitted their doctoral thesis may apply, subject to Institute rules.
  • Demonstrated research experience in at least two of the following areas:
    • Mathematical or hydrological modelling of water systems;
    • Urban drainage or flood modelling;
    • Dynamical systems, system identification, optimisation, or control;
    • Physics-based or physics-guided data-driven modelling.
  • Experience with numerical modelling and scientific programming.
  • Evidence of research ability through peer-reviewed publications or comparable scholarly outputs.
  • Strong written and oral communication skills and the ability to work in an interdisciplinary team.
  • Minimum 60% or equivalent grade from Graduation onward and 55% or equivalent grade in Class 10th and 12th.

Desirable Qualification/Experience

  • Hands-on experience with EPA-SWMM or a comparable hydrodynamic/hydrological modelling platform.
  • Experience in robust, adaptive, gain-scheduled or feedback control of water or infrastructure systems.
  • Familiarity with MATLAB and/or Python; experience with GIS tools and geospatial datasets is advantageous.
  • Experience combining sensor observations or forecasts with models for real-time prediction and operational decision-making.
  • Interest in physics-guided machine learning, uncertainty quantification, infrastructure networks and climate-resilient water systems.

Job Description

  • Develop mathematical and control-oriented models of urban drainage, rainfall-runoff and water-depth dynamics.
  • Integrate high-fidelity hydrodynamic simulations with compact, interpretable and computationally efficient models.
  • Design robust, adaptive or model-based control strategies for flood mitigation under uncertain and time-varying conditions.
  • Explore physics-guided machine-learning methods for prediction, control and infrastructure-resilience applications.
  • Work with geospatial, hydrometeorological and sensor data; evaluate models for Indian urban or peri-urban case studies.
  • Publish research in high-quality journals and conferences, contribute to project deliverables, and collaborate with students and research partners.
