SSC GD Constable 2026: Everything You Need to Know Before You Apply
SSC GD Constable 2026: Everything You Need to Know Before You Apply
Last Updated: July 19, 2026
Every year, over 50 lakh young men and women across India fill out the SSC GD Constable application form. Most of them are from small towns, rural areas, and families where this job represents the first step into financial stability.
But here is what breaks my heart: a huge number of these applications get rejected for avoidable reasons. Wrong photo dimensions. Incorrect category certificates. Age calculation errors. And thousands more clear the written exam only to fail the physical test because they trained wrong.
I spoke to a constable posted in Jammu last year. He told me his village in Bihar had 47 applicants for SSC GD 2024. Only 3 made it to the physical test. Only 1 cleared. Not because the others weren’t capable. Because no one told them how the system actually works.
This article is for those 47 applicants. And the lakhs like them.
What is SSC GD Constable?
SSC GD stands for Staff Selection Commission General Duty. It is the recruitment exam for constable posts in Central Armed Police Forces (CAPF): BSF, CISF, CRPF, ITBP, SSB, AR, NIA, and Assam Rifles.
This is not a state police job. It is central government, which means better pay, transfer policies, and promotion avenues than most state police constables get.
The 2026 context: With heightened focus on border security and internal security, CAPF recruitment has been steady. The 2025 notification had around 50,000+ vacancies. Expect similar or higher numbers for 2026.
Eligibility: The Details That Trip People Up
Age Limit
| Category | Age Range | Birth Year (for 2026 exam) |
|---|---|---|
| General | 18-23 years | Between Jan 2, 2003 and Jan 1, 2008 |
| OBC | 18-26 years | Between Jan 2, 2000 and Jan 1, 2008 |
| SC/ST | 18-28 years | Between Jan 2, 1998 and Jan 1, 2008 |
The trap: Many candidates calculate age from today’s date. SSC calculates from the crucial date mentioned in the notification — usually January 1. Always double-check with the official notification’s crucial date.
