NDA 2026: Everything You Need to Know to Join the National Defence Academy

Rojgarpulse Team·19 Jul 2026

What is NDA? (The Basics)

The National Defence Academy is a joint services training institution where cadets of the Indian Army, Navy, and Air Force train together for 3 years before moving to their respective service academies for specialized training.

After NDA:

  • Army cadets – Indian Military Academy (IMA), Dehradun
  • Navy cadets – Indian Naval Academy (INA), Ezhimala
  • Air Force cadets – Air Force Academy (AFA), Hyderabad

The 2026 context: With India’s evolving security challenges – border tensions, maritime security, aerospace dominance – the armed forces need sharp, disciplined young leaders. NDA remains the premier entry point.

NDA 2026: Exam Pattern

Written Examination (Conducted by UPSC)

Paper Subject Questions Marks Duration
Paper 1 Mathematics 120 300 2.5 hours
Paper 2 General Ability Test (GAT) 150 600 2.5 hours

Total written marks: 900

Key features:

  • Both papers on same day
  • Negative marking: 0.33 per wrong answer in Math, 1.33 in GAT
  • GAT includes: English (200 marks) + General Knowledge (400 marks)

SSB Interview (Services Selection Board)

Stage Duration What Happens
Stage 1 (Screening) Day 1 Intelligence tests, PPDT

Stage 2 (GTO Tasks) Day 3-4 Group discussions, outdoor tasks, individual obstacles
Stage 2 (Interview) Day 5-6 Personal interview with Board President
Conference Final day All assessors discuss and decide

The SSB reality: 5-6 days of intense psychological and physical assessment. You can’t fake your way through. The tests reveal your true personality – your leadership, teamwork, stress response, and values.

Eligibility: The Strict Rules

Age Limit

Exam Birth Date Range (Expected)
NDA (I) 2026 July 2, 2006 - July 1, 2009
NDA (II) 2026 January 2, 2007 - January 1, 2010

The age trap: NDA has the strictest age limits among all government exams. Even 1 day over disqualifies you.

Educational Qualification

Wing Requirement
Army Wing 12th pass in any stream
Navy & Air Force Wing 12th pass with Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics

Physical Standards

Standard Requirement
Height (Army) 157.5 cm (162.5 cm for Gorkhas)
Height (Air Force) 162.5 cm
Height (Navy) 157 cm
Vision 6/6 in one eye, 6/9 in other (correctable to 6/6)

The medical reality: SSB medical examination is thorough. They check everything – eyes, ears, teeth, spine, knees, feet, heart, lungs. Many candidates clear SSB but fail medical.

Mathematics: The Make-or-Break Paper

NDA Math is 11th-12th level but with a twist – speed matters. 120 questions in 150 minutes means 75 seconds per question.

Topic Weightage Difficulty
Algebra 25-30% Medium-Hard
Trigonometry 15-20% Medium
Calculus 15-20% Hard
Matrices & Determinants 10-12% Medium
Statistics & Probability 10% Medium
Analytical Geometry 10-12% Medium-Hard
Vector Algebra 8-10% Medium

The preparation strategy:

  • NCERT Class 11-12 is your Bible. Know every solved example.
  • Then move to R.S. Aggarwal or Arihant NDA-specific books.
  • Speed drills: 50 questions in 45 minutes, daily.
  • Previous year papers: Solve last 10 years’ papers twice.

General Ability Test (GAT): The 600-Mark Giant

English (200 marks, 50 questions)

Topic Questions Strategy
Reading Comprehension 10 Practice speed reading
Grammar & Usage 15 Rules + practice
Vocabulary 15 Word lists, roots, prefixes
Synonyms/Antonyms 10 Contextual understanding

General Knowledge (400 marks, 100 questions)

Section Questions Marks Focus
Physics 25 100 11th-12th NCERT
Chemistry 15 60 11th-12th NCERT
General Science 10 40 Biology, environment
History 20 80 Indian history, freedom struggle
Geography 15 60 Physical, Indian, world

Polity 5 20 Constitution basics

The science dominance: 50% of GK marks come from Physics and Chemistry. If you’re a PCM student, this is your advantage.

The SSB Interview: The Real Test

SSB is not an interview. It’s a 5-day personality assessment. You can’t prepare for it the way you prepare for a written exam. But you can understand what they’re looking for.

The 15 Officer-Like Qualities (OLQs)

Quality What It Means How It’s Tested
Effective Intelligence Solving practical problems GTO tasks, group planning
Reasoning Ability Logical thinking Intelligence tests
Organizing Ability Planning and execution Group planning exercise
Power of Expression Clear communication GD, lecturette, interview
Cooperation Teamwork over ego All group tasks
Self Confidence Belief in your abilities All situations
Initiative Starting action Individual obstacles, GTO
Speed of Decision Quick, correct choices SRT, sudden situations
Courage Facing fear Outdoor tasks
Stamina Physical endurance Individual obstacles, running

The SSB myth: “You need to be from a military family.” False. Most NDA cadets are from civilian families. What matters is your personality, not your pedigree.

The 6-Month NDA Preparation Timeline

Month Focus Daily Hours
1 Math concepts (Algebra, Trig), English basics 4-5
2 Math (Calculus, Matrices), Physics/Chemistry NCERT 5-6
3 Math revision, GK intensive, English vocabulary 5-6
4 Previous year papers, speed building, SSB awareness 6
5 Mock tests (written), SSB practice (PPDT, WAT, SRT) 6
6 Final revision, physical fitness, exam temperament 5 (taper)

Physical fitness: Start running 2-3 km daily from Month 1. SSB has physical tasks. Being fit helps confidence too.

Final Words: The NDA Commitment

NDA is not a job. It’s a way of life. The training is rigorous, the discipline is absolute, and the commitment is for life.

If you’re considering NDA because “government job with good salary,” stop. There are easier paths. If you’re considering it because the thought of wearing that uniform, leading men in battle, and serving the nation makes your heart race – then prepare like your life depends on it.

Because for those who make it, it does.
