CDS 2026: The Complete Guide to Cracking the Combined Defence Services Exam

What is CDS?

The Combined Defence Services Examination is conducted by UPSC twice a year for admission to Indian Military Academy (Army), Indian Naval Academy (Navy), Air Force Academy (Air Force), and Officers Training Academy (Army – Short Service).

Subject-Wise Strategy

English (100 marks): Reading Comprehension, Synonyms/Antonyms, Error Spotting, Sentence Improvement, Jumbled Sentences, Fill in the Blanks. Build vocabulary systematically – 20 words daily.

General Knowledge (100 marks): Indian History (20%), Geography (20%), Polity (15%), Economics (10%), General Science (15%), Current Affairs (15%), Miscellaneous (5%). Defence focus: Armed Forces structure, commands, equipment, recent exercises.

Elementary Mathematics (100 marks): Arithmetic (30%), Algebra (20%), Trigonometry (15%), Geometry (20%), Mensuration (10%), Statistics (5%). Target 80+ attempts with 85% accuracy.

4-Month Preparation Plan

Month 1: Foundation – English vocabulary, GK NCERTs, Math concept revision Month 2: Intensive practice – PYQs, advanced grammar, defense GK, speed drills Month 3: Mock mastery (3 per week), SSB preparation, physical fitness Month 4: Final push – revision, light mocks, medical pre-checkup

SSB: The Real Test

15 Officer-Like Qualities including Effective Intelligence, Reasoning Ability, Organizing Ability, Power of Expression, Cooperation, Initiative, Self Confidence, Courage, and Stamina.

The PPDT: Write a positive, action-oriented story. Contribute meaningfully in discussion without dominating. Help group reach consensus.
