ESE 2026 – Result Timeline
The Engineering Services Examination follows a fixed annual calendar defined by UPSC, and the result of each stage is declared within a few weeks of the exam. ESE is one of UPSC's exams where individual scorecard documents are published for candidates after the written stage, in addition to the roll number list. How to Check UPSC ESE Result and Scorecard on upsc.gov.in
ESE results come in three parts: the roll-number PDF for each written stage, the candidate-wise scorecard (released after the written stages), and the final recommendation list. UPSC keeps the scorecard available for a limited window, so candidates should download it promptly. Follow these steps:
- Visit the official UPSC website www.upsc.gov.in.
- For written results, open the "Written Results" section under "What's New" and look for "Written Results of Engineering Services Examination, 2026". Open the PDF and search your roll number (Ctrl+F). The notice states the cut-off and the number of candidates shortlisted.

ESE 2026 Cut-off Marks – Discipline and Category-wise Details
Unlike many other UPSC exams, ESE cut-offs are fixed discipline-wise: UPSC sets separate cut-offs for Civil, Mechanical, Electrical, and Electronics & Telecommunication Engineering, because the question papers and vacancy positions differ across streams. At the Preliminary stage, the cut-off is applied on the aggregate of Paper-I (General Studies and Engineering Aptitude, 200 marks) and Paper-II (General Principles of the discipline, 300 marks), for a total of 500 marks. Category-wise minimums are set for General, EWS, OBC, SC, ST and PwBD candidates.
In the Main Examination, each discipline has two conventional papers of 300 marks each (600 marks total). The written cut-off at the Mains stage decides who is called for the Interview, which carries 200 marks. The final cut-off is applied on the combined aggregate: 500 (Prelims) + 600 (Mains) + 200 (Interview) = 1,300 marks. Selection Process and Next Stages After the Mains Result
The ESE selection process is straightforward compared to defence exams, because there is no SSB. Stage 1 is the Preliminary Examination: an objective test of two papers (GS/Aptitude and discipline-based). Stage 2 is the Main Examination with two conventional papers in the discipline. Stage 3 is the Interview/Personality Test (200 marks), conducted by a UPSC board; candidates who clear the Mains cut-off receive interview call letters through the marks/scorecard window and notices on the website.
After the Interview, UPSC prepares the final merit list on the combined 1,300-mark aggregate, subject to a candidate's preferences for services, vacancy position, and medical fitness. Selected engineers are allocated to services such as Indian Railway Management Service, Central Public Works Department, Military Engineer Services, Indian Defence Service of Engineers, Central Water Engineering Service and other Group 'A'/Group 'B' engineering cadres.
