The Public Service Commission, West Bengal will hold the English Stenographer (Basic Grade) in Schedule A & B Recruitment Examination, 2025, on the results of which recruitment to the posts of Personal Assistant in the cadre of Schedule 'A' English Stenographer and Schedule 'B' English Stenographer, Basic Grade will be made. Examination structure

• The examination consists of three papers: (1) General English (100 marks), (2) Dictation & Transcription (400 marks) and (3) Computer Typing (100 marks).
• The Commission will hold the examination in Paper-I (General English) in the first instance in Kolkata. On the basis of results on this paper, a limited number of candidates will be allowed to sit for the other two papers, i.e. Paper-II (Dictation and Transcription) and Paper-III (Computer Typing). The final merit list will be prepared on the basis of marks obtained in all three papers taken together.
• The Commission shall fix qualifying marks in Paper-I, Paper-II and Paper-III separately and in the aggregate, and shall have discretion to relax such qualifying marks for candidates belonging to the Scheduled Castes, Scheduled Tribes, Other Backward Classes, other reserved categories such as Persons with Benchmark Disabilities, and Meritorious Sportspersons in West Bengal or other categories, as may be reserved in future.
• The examination will be held at various centres in Kolkata tentatively in December, 2026 or thereabout.

Scale of pay

Pay Level-9 (Rs. 28,900/- - Rs. 74,500/-) under W.B.S. (ROPA) Rules, 2019.

Age limit

Not below 18 years but not more than 44 years as on 01.01.2025 (i.e. born not earlier than 2nd January 1981 and not later than 1st January 2007). Age as recorded only in the Madhyamik or equivalent certificate will be accepted.

• There shall be no age limit for permanent Schedule 'B' Stenographers, permanent Typists, permanent Steno-Typists and permanent Clerk-cum-Typists who are in service under the Government of West Bengal.
• The upper age limit is relaxable by 5 years for S.C. and S.T. candidates and by 3 years for O.B.C. (non-creamy layer) candidates of West Bengal. In the case of Persons with Benchmark Disabilities (PwBD), the upper age limit is relaxable upto 45 years. No relaxation is applicable to S.C. / S.T. / O.B.C. (non-creamy layer) candidates of other States, as they shall be treated as general candidates.
• No claim for being a member of S.C. / S.T. / O.B.C. (Non-Creamy layer) / PwBD / MSP will be entertained after submission of the application.

Application fee

Rs. 160/- (Rupees one hundred sixty only) plus service charges whenever applicable, through online mode. SC / ST candidates of West Bengal and Persons with Benchmark Disabilities (PwBD) having physical disability of 40% and above are not required to pay any fee. OBC candidates of West Bengal are, however, required to pay the usual fee as aforesaid. No exemption of fee is available to SC / ST / OBC candidates of other States. No claim for refund of the fee will be entertained, nor will it be held in reserve for any other examination.

Reservation

• Some vacancies are reserved for Persons with Benchmark Disabilities (40% and above), provided they are otherwise suitable and possess the capacity to perform the duties attached to the post. The benefits of reservation of vacancies for E.W.S. / S.C. / S.T. / O.B.C. (Non-Creamy Layer) candidates are admissible to E.W.S. / S.C. / S.T. / O.B.C. (Non-Creamy Layer) candidates of West Bengal only. The E.W.S. / S.C. / S.T. / O.B.C. (Non-Creamy Layer) candidates of other States shall be considered for Unreserved posts only.
• The reservation for OBC (Non-Creamy Layer) will be determined vide Notification No. 945-BCW/MR-23/2026 dated 18th May 2026 of the Backward Classes Welfare Department, Govt. of W.B.
• The reservation for PwBD (40% and above) will be determined vide Notification No. Labr/85-Emp/EC/1M-01/2025 dated 25.05.2026.
• Certain vacancies are reserved for candidates belonging to Meritorious Sportspersons in the area of International Competition, National Competition, Inter-University Tournament and National Sports / Games for School Education, in the listed sports: Athletics (including Track and Field events), Badminton, Basket Ball, Cricket, Football, Hockey, Swimming, Table Tennis, Volley Ball, Tennis, Weightlifting, Wrestling, Boxing, Cycling, Gymnastics, Judo, and others listed in the advertisement.

Mode of application

Applications can be submitted through online only. Submission of more than one application by the same candidate is strictly forbidden, and such application will be rejected. An application once submitted shall be treated as final; no request for change in the application will be entertained.

The Edit Window may be accessed by applicants by logging into their individual accounts at https://psc.wb.gov.in. Applicants are advised to verify the details provided in the online application very carefully, and are particularly advised to obtain a printout of the form to identify any discrepancies. The Edit option can be availed only once during the aforesaid period; no request for any change will be entertained after that period.

Note on the examination

Knowledge of Bengali will be tested for candidates whose mother tongue is other than Bengali / Nepali, at the time of the test of typing on computer. Candidature of candidates with poor performance in the said knowledge of Bengali test shall be liable to be cancelled.
