| Conducting Body | Uttar Pradesh Education Service Selection Commission (UPESSC), Prayagraj |
| Post Name | Principal (Pracharya) — Aided Degree College, Higher Education, Uttar Pradesh |
| Advertisement No. | 02/2026 |
| Reported Vacancies | 111 posts in Aided Degree Colleges (as reported from the UP Higher Education Directorate) |
| Exam Mode | Offline (OMR Based) |
| Question Type | Objective (MCQ) |
| Total Questions | 120 |
| Part-A — General Knowledge | 40 Questions (120 Marks) |
| Part-B — Administrative Aptitude Test | 80 Questions (240 Marks) |
| Marks Per Question | +3 Marks |
| Total Written Marks | 360 Marks |
| Negative Marking | Applicable — 1 mark deducted for each wrong answer |
| Interview | 40 Marks (after written exam) |
| Selection Stages | Written Exam, Research Score Verification, Interview and Document Verification |
- The written examination is a single objective paper of 120 multiple-choice questions carrying 360 marks in total.
- Each correct answer awards 3 marks and each incorrect answer deducts 1 mark — candidates must answer carefully because the 1/3 penalty ratio is steep.
- Part-B (Administrative Aptitude Test) is the dominant section: 80 questions for 240 marks, which is two-thirds of the written exam.
- Part-A (General Knowledge) carries 40 questions for 120 marks — one third of the written paper.
- The interview after the written exam carries 40 marks, so the written stage still decides the bulk of the final outcome.
Question Difficulty Level Distribution (from the published scheme)
| Question Difficulty Level | Share of Questions |
|---|---|
| Average Level | 50 percent of questions |
| Difficult Level | 30 percent of questions |
| Most Difficult Level | 20 percent of questions |
- The official scheme fixes the paper composition as 50 percent average-level, 30 percent difficult-level and 20 percent most-difficult-level questions.
- Half the paper is average level, so disciplined scoring on routine questions protects the rank while the 20 percent most difficult questions separate the toppers.
- Because of negative marking, skipping a most-difficult question is mathematically better when elimination is not possible.
Part-A — General Knowledge (40 Questions, 120 Marks)
- Part-A consists of 40 objective-type multiple-choice questions, each carrying 3 marks.
- A minimum of 3 questions will be set from each unit of Part-A.

- Unit-3 Information and Communication Technology (ICT) — ICT advantages, disadvantages and uses; basics of Internet and its applications; developments in Educational Technology.
Part-B — Administrative Aptitude Test (80 Questions, 240 Marks)
- Part-B consists of 80 objective-type multiple-choice questions, each carrying 3 marks.
- A minimum of 5 questions will be set from each unit of Part-B.
- The section tests governance, statutes, finance and the leadership duties expected of a college Principal — this is where most of the score differential lies.

Why the 2026 Scheme Is a Major Change from 2019
- In the last Principal recruitment of 2019, the written exam carried only 100 marks with a 20-mark interview.
- The revised 2026 scheme raises the written exam to 360 marks and the interview to 40 marks — written-stage weight has increased far more than the interview.
- Negative marking of 1 mark per wrong answer is part of the revised scheme.
- The fixed difficulty distribution (50/30/20) and the two-part structure (40 GK questions + 80 administrative-aptitude questions) were not part of the earlier 2019 pattern.
- These change-notes are indicative observations from the reported revision — the official UPESSC syllabus and scheme document is binding.
Related — Principal (School Education, Secondary) Advt 08/2026
- Separately, UPESSC issued Advertisement No. 08/2026 on 23 October 2026 announcing 1,475 Principal vacancies in the School Education (Secondary) department, with online applications invited — this is a different recruitment from the 02/2026 degree-college Principal exam covered on this page.
- Candidates should not mix the two syllabi: the 02/2026 syllabus (Part-A GK + Part-B administrative aptitude for higher education) applies to the degree-college Principal examination.
- Both notifications are available on the UPESSC advertisements page.

Preparation Strategy — UPESSC Principal 2026
- Prioritise Part-B: 80 questions (240 marks) come from administrative aptitude, and the units on UP State Universities Act 1973, UGC Act, financial management and governance rules reward document-level reading.
- Build a unit-wise checklist with the minimum question floor in mind — at least 5 questions per Part-B unit and at least 3 per Part-A unit.
- Prepare the regulatory-body matrix (UGC, NCTE, AICTE, MCI, NAAC, BCI, RCI) with their domains and key functions — a favourite comparison area.
- For Part-A current affairs, cover state, national and international events of the recent months, plus personalities, sports, science-technology and environment.
- Read the educational thinkers list (Tilak, Gandhi, Malviya, Vivekanand, Tagore, Radhakrishnan, Kalam) chronologically with their institutions and books.
- Practise full-length 120-question mocks within the exam duration applying the +3/−1 rule; track an accuracy threshold above 70 percent to neutralise the 1/3 penalty.
- Use the official question-challenge window data and released key to calibrate topic-level weaknesses after each attempt.
- Verify all rules from official documents — the syllabus PDF, the notification and the commission portals.
