Exam Pattern

Paper-I Exam Pattern (Qualifying Stage)

• General Intelligence & Reasoning and General Awareness are compulsory for all candidates.
• The engineering part is based on the post and stream opted for in the application.
• Negative marking: 0.25 marks deducted per wrong answer.
• Paper-I is qualifying; shortlisting for Paper-II is based on normalized, category-wise marks.

Paper-II Exam Pattern (Merit Stage)

• Duration: 2 hours (2 hours 40 minutes with scribe).
• Negative marking: 1 mark deducted per wrong answer.
• Only the stream opted for at the time of application is tested and cannot be changed later.
• Final merit is decided only by the normalized Paper-II score.

• IS 456:2000 Code of Practice and Steam Table are made available on-screen where required; a Scientific Calculator is also provided on-screen. No physical reference material is allowed inside the exam lab.
• Marks are normalized when the exam runs across multiple shifts; Electrical and Mechanical branches, as well as IMD streams (Part-D/E/F), are normalized against each other as if they were separate shifts.

How to Prepare

• Start with the Paper-I compulsory sections (Reasoning and General Awareness) early, since they carry equal weight to the engineering section but need less depth.
• Build your Paper-II preparation around your opted stream's full syllabus first - it carries 300 of the total 500 marks and decides the final merit.
• Practice previous year SSC JE papers for your stream to get used to the Diploma/graduation-level difficulty set by SSC.
• Since Paper-II has 1-mark negative marking (four times stricter than Paper-I), attempt only questions you are reasonably sure of in that stage.
