About the Programme

Land degradation is one of the major environmental challenges affecting ecosystem productivity, biodiversity, food and water security, livelihoods and climate resilience. This programme is designed to bridge the gap between Earth Observation technology, scientific assessment and practical land management.

Remote Sensing and GIS provide powerful tools for spatially explicit assessment and monitoring of land degradation. The increasing availability of multi-temporal satellite observations, cloud-based geospatial platforms, AI and advanced spatial modelling has opened new opportunities for operational land degradation monitoring and restoration planning.

Course Structure

  • Module 1: Understanding Land Degradation – concept, processes, drivers, Land Degradation Neutrality, global and Indian perspectives
  • Module 2: Remote Sensing and GIS – fundamentals, satellite data, image preprocessing, GIS-based spatial analysis, map preparation
  • Module 3: Drivers and Indicators – satellite data analysis, dataset selection, time-series and trend indicators
  • Module 4: Land Degradation Monitoring and Assessment – indicator/process-based assessment, multi-criteria evaluation, vulnerability assessment

Training Approach
