Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Patna invites applications for the position of Counsellor in the Student Affairs Section. The advertisement number is IITP/SA/2026-27/02, dated 21/08/2026. The Counsellor will be responsible for the emotional, psychological, and overall wellbeing of the student community and will work under the Student Affairs Office at the IIT Patna campus (Bihta, Patna – 801106).

Role and Responsibilities

The Counsellor is expected to provide individual and group counselling to students, handle academic and personal stress, career-related anxiety, and behavioural concerns, and to build a supportive wellness ecosystem on campus. Key responsibilities include conducting orientation and awareness sessions, maintaining confidential case records, coordinating with faculty and wardens, referring critical cases to clinical professionals, and preparing periodic reports for the Student Affairs Office. The role requires empathy, discretion, and the ability to engage with a diverse student population.

Eligibility and Qualifications

Candidates with a postgraduate degree in Psychology, Social Work, Counselling, or an equivalent discipline, and prior experience in student / mental-health counselling are encouraged to apply. A sound understanding of adolescent and youth psychology, crisis intervention, and confidentiality norms is expected. Candidates with experience in an educational or residential-institute setting will be preferred. The institute may also consider candidates with an M.Phil / Ph.D. in Clinical Psychology subject to the project requirement.

Emoluments

The emoluments are as per IIT Patna norms for the Counsellor position and will be communicated to shortlisted candidates. The engagement is on a contract / temporary basis co-terminus with the requirement of the Student Affairs Section.

Age Limit

Age and relaxation follow institute norms; reserved-category candidates receive relaxation as per Government of India rules.
