Selection Process

As per the official announcement, selection for both System Analyst/Senior Programmer (Advt. No. 16/2026) and Jr. System Analyst/Programmer, HSIIDC (Advt. No. 17/2026) is based on two stages:

  • Subject Knowledge Test: A 150-mark subjective paper of 3 hours duration, conducted in English. Candidates must secure a minimum of 35% marks to be considered for the interview stage. This test carries 87.5% weightage in the final merit.
  • Interview/Viva-Voce: Only candidates who clear the 35% cut-off in the Subject Knowledge Test are called for interview. The number of candidates called will be three times the number of advertised posts, including bracketed candidates, subject to the 35% qualifying criteria. The interview carries 12.5% weightage in the final merit.

The final merit list is prepared by adding the marks obtained in the Subject Knowledge Test and the Interview. Attendance in all stages of the recruitment process is mandatory for candidates.

Syllabus 2026

The syllabus for the Subject Knowledge Test is common for both System Analyst/Senior Programmer (Advt. No. 16/2026) and Jr. System Analyst/Programmer, HSIIDC (Advt. No. 17/2026), and is divided into 10 sections covering core computer science and engineering topics.

1. Engineering Mathematics

  • Discrete Mathematics: Propositional and first order logic; sets, relations, functions, partial orders and lattices; monoids, groups; graphs (connectivity, matching, colouring); combinatorics (counting, recurrence relations, generating functions)
  • Linear Algebra: Matrices, determinants, system of linear equations, eigenvalues and eigenvectors, LU decomposition
  • Calculus: Limits, continuity and differentiability, maxima and minima, mean value theorem, integration
  • Probability and Statistics: Random variables; uniform, normal, exponential, Poisson and binomial distributions; mean, median, mode and standard deviation; conditional probability and Bayes theorem

2. Digital Logic

  • Boolean algebra
  • Combinational and sequential circuits
  • Minimization
  • Number representations and computer arithmetic (fixed and floating point)

3. Computer Organization and Architecture

  • Machine instructions and addressing modes
  • ALU, data-path and control unit
  • Instruction pipelining, pipeline hazards
  • Memory hierarchy (cache, main memory and secondary storage)
  • I/O interface (interrupt and DMA mode)

4. Programming and Data Structures

  • Programming in C
  • Recursion
  • Arrays, stacks, queues, linked lists, trees, binary search trees, binary heaps, graphs

5. Algorithms

  • Searching, sorting, hashing
  • Asymptotic worst case time and space complexity
  • Algorithm design techniques (greedy, dynamic programming and divide-and-conquer)
  • Graph traversals, minimum spanning trees, shortest paths

6. Theory of Computation

  • Regular expressions and finite automata
  • Context-free grammars and push-down automata
  • Regular and context-free languages, pumping lemma
  • Turing machines and undecidability

7. Compiler Design

  • Lexical analysis, parsing, syntax-directed translation
  • Runtime environments
  • Intermediate code generation
  • Local optimisation; data flow analyses (constant propagation, liveness analysis, common sub-expression elimination)

8. Operating System

  • System calls, processes, threads, inter-process communication, concurrency and synchronization
  • Deadlock
  • CPU and I/O scheduling
  • Memory management and virtual memory
  • File systems

9. Databases

  • ER-model
  • Relational model (relational algebra, tuple calculus, SQL)
  • Integrity constraints, normal forms
  • File organization, indexing (e.g., B and B+ trees)
  • Transactions and concurrency control

10. Computer Networks

  • Concept of layering (OSI and TCP/IP protocol stacks)
  • Basics of packet, circuit and virtual circuit switching
  • Data link layer (framing, error detection, medium access control, Ethernet bridging)
  • Routing protocols (shortest path, flooding, distance vector and link state routing)
  • Fragmentation and IP addressing, IPv4, CIDR notation, basics of IP support protocols (ARP, DHCP, ICMP), Network Address Translation (NAT)
  • Transport layer (flow control and congestion control, UDP, TCP, sockets)
  • Application layer protocols (DNS, SMTP, HTTP, FTP, Email)

Note: The official notification does not indicate which of these ten sections carries higher weightage, so candidates should prepare all sections thoroughly rather than prioritising based on assumed weightage.

How to Prepare

  • Go through all 10 syllabus sections first and map each topic to standard computer science engineering references before starting subject-wise study.
  • Since the paper is subjective and 3 hours long, practise writing full-length descriptive answers, not just solving objective questions, to build speed and clarity within the time limit.
  • Prioritise Programming and Data Structures, Algorithms, Databases, Operating Systems and Computer Networks, as these are typically the most application-heavy sections in a subjective computer science paper.
  • Revise Engineering Mathematics and Digital Logic separately, as these foundational sections are easy to lose marks on if left for the end.
  • Attempt previous HPSC Subject Knowledge Test papers or similar GATE-pattern computer science papers, since the syllabus sections closely mirror standard computer science curricula.
  • Keep the 35% qualifying threshold in mind - since only three times the number of posts are called for interview, aim to comfortably clear the cut-off rather than just meeting it.
