How to Prepare for HPSC Senior Manager & Manager (IA) Exam 2026
Start by mapping the entire syllabus against your existing civil engineering study material, and identify the six broad areas - Structural, Geotechnical, Water Resources, Environmental, Transportation and Geomatics Engineering - as separate preparation blocks. Since the paper is subjective and 3 hours long for 150 marks, practise writing full-length descriptive answers with diagrams, derivations and design steps rather than only solving objective-type questions. Give extra time to Structural Engineering topics (Solid Mechanics, Structural Analysis, Concrete and Steel Structures), as it forms the largest and most detailed section of the syllabus. Revise design codes (IRC codes for pavements, limit state and working stress methods for concrete and steel) since the syllabus explicitly references code-based design. Attempt previous year subjective-type engineering services or state PSC papers on similar topics to build speed and answer-writing skill within the 3-hour format. In the final weeks, focus on revising formulas, standard theories (Terzaghi, Meyerhoff, Rankine, Coulomb, Bishop, Boussinesq) and code provisions, since these are commonly tested in descriptive engineering papers.
