Reserve Bank of India — Assistant

Reserve Bank of India (RBI) Assistant Examination

The RBI Assistant examination is a national-level banking recruitment exam conducted by the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) to hire Assistants (clerical cadre) for its offices across the country. It is one of the most sought-after bank exams because it offers central-bank prestige, a high pay package for a clerical post, and strong job security. The exam is held roughly once a year. For the current cycle (Panel Year 2025), the RBI released its notification on 16 February 2026 for 650 vacancies across its regional offices, including Mumbai, New Delhi, Chennai, Kolkata, Kanpur & Lucknow, and others.

Candidates must hold a graduate degree and be between 20 and 28 years of age (with category-wise relaxation). Selection has three stages: a Preliminary (Prelims) online test, a Main (Mains) online test, and a qualifying Language Proficiency Test (LPT). There is no personal interview. Figures here are based on the current (2026) notification and previous official cycles; always refer to the official notification for binding details.

Selection Process

The selection process has three stages. Only Mains marks decide the final merit list; the other two stages are qualifying in nature.

  1. Preliminary Examination: Online test of 100 marks. It is only qualifying; Prelims marks are not counted in the final merit. Candidates clearing the section-wise and overall Prelims cut-off move to Mains.
  2. Main Examination: Online test of 200 marks. Mains marks decide the final merit. Candidates must clear section-wise and overall cut-offs to be considered for the LPT.
  3. Language Proficiency Test (LPT): Qualifying test of working knowledge of the official/local language of the state for which the candidate applied (normally the language studied up to class 10th, as specified in the notification). Those who qualify are placed in the final merit list for provisional appointment, subject to document verification and medical fitness.

Note: There is no interview and no separate DV stage beyond the LPT; final selection is purely on Mains merit plus a qualifying LPT.

Preparation Tips & Strategy

  • Know the pattern first: with section-wise timing and sectional cut-offs, practise finishing each section within its fixed time limit.
  • Master speed maths: drill simplification, squares, cubes, percentages and tables so calculations are fast and accurate.
  • Practise puzzles daily: Reasoning is puzzle-heavy; solve linear/circular seating, floor, scheduling and tabulation puzzles from easy to Mains-level difficulty.
  • Treat English as a scoring section: read editorials daily, build vocabulary, and practise cloze tests, para jumbles and error spotting.
  • Current affairs for Mains: cover the last 6–8 months with a focus on banking, economy, RBI policies, government schemes and appointments; make weekly revision notes.
  • Computer knowledge is easy marks: revise MS Office, internet, networking, digital payments and abbreviations; standardised revision is enough.
  • Attempt full mock tests: take timed full-length Prelims and Mains mocks, analyse mistakes section-wise, and review previous year papers for difficulty level.
  • Accuracy over speed: with 0.25 negative marking, avoid blind guessing; attempt sure questions and skip doubtful ones, especially in the qualifying Prelims.
  • Keep your state-language edge ready: since the LPT tests the local language of the state applied for, prepare to read and write in it before the test is announced.
